DINplus – The Oldest and Leading Accredited Certification for Wood Pellets

DINplus has represented the highest level of expertise in wood pellet certification for well over 20 years and is the oldest certification in this field. As part of TÜV Rheinland, our certification body DIN CERTCO is the leading accredited certification body for wood pellets in Europe and the only organization authorized to issue the DIN mark for wood pellets. Our certification is based on the DIN EN 17225-2 standard, ensuring clear limits for performance and pollutant minimization.

With around 500 valid certificates from more than 25 countries and continuous growth, we are a reliable and experienced partner for the industry. Integrity, transparency, and fairness are at the core of our values – we build trust with our independent and globally recognized DINplus mark, while consciously refraining from imposing license fees per ton of production. This ensures a fair and economically attractive certification system.

Ensure Quality at Every Level with DINplus Certification

Requirements for wood pellets for DIN plus certification

During our annual inspection, we monitor every step up to the loading of the pellets: from the natural purity of the wood and internal quality assurance measures to fine fraction screening and temperature monitoring during loading. This ensures the highest product quality up to the point of transfer.

For traders without physical contact with pellets, we offer a flexible solution: the inspection is conducted as an annual document review through a digital remote audit.

Inspection, Testing, and Certification of Wood Pellets

Through inspection, testing, and certification of wood pellets, we verify the high quality characteristics in wood pellet production by monitoring internal quality assurance measures. Product testing is conducted in qualified and recognized testing laboratories. For producers, the following properties are examined, among others:

  • Moisture content
  • Bulk density
  • Fine particle content
  • Net calorific value
  • Mechanical durability
  • Ash content
  • Pellet length
  • Chemical contaminants

How the DINplus Certification Process Works

After receiving your application, we plan an inspection during which a sample is also taken for laboratory testing. For traders without physical contact with the pellets, a remote audit without sampling is scheduled instead. You will then receive the DINplus mark along with a registration number, which must be included on your bag designs or delivery notes (for bulk pellets). These designs must be approved by us before they can be printed.

The registration number ensures transparency, as end customers can find it in our database and verify the validity of your certification.

After successful testing and a positive evaluation, the certificate is issued. It is valid for five years, provided that annual surveillances are successfully completed, and can be extended for another five years each time.

1. Who Can Be Certified?

We differentiate between producers, traders with bagging facilities, and traders without bagging facilities, and our DINplus certification is available for all these types of certificate holders. For producers and traders with bagging facilities, an on-site inspection is conducted annually. For traders without bagging facilities, an annual document review is carried out through a remote audit.

2. How Long Does the Certification Process Take?

The duration of the certification process depends on the timely submission of the application, your availability, as well as that of the auditor for inspection planning. In addition, the time required for sample testing in an independent laboratory and any deviations identified can impact the timeline. On average, the process takes 2–3 months from the application submission to certification. However, in cases of high urgency with appropriately expedited scheduling, the process can be completed significantly faster.

3. Do DINplus Wood Pellets Comply with Normative Requirements in Other Countries?

The DINplus product certification for wood pellets is based on the requirements of DIN EN ISO 17225-2. This means that DINplus-certified wood pellets meet the internationally standardized requirements for wood pellets. The German edition (DIN) of the standard EN ISO 17225-2 is equivalent to comparable national editions of the standard in other countries (e.g., NF in France, UNI in Italy, or BS in the United Kingdom). This equivalence is ensured through the agreed ratification of standards in the participating countries.

4. What Needs to Be Considered for Packaging and Accompanying Documents?

Wood pellets may be delivered either packaged or unpackaged. The required labeling for packaging or accompanying documents is specified in the labeling requirements .
