Updated Seedling Certification scheme

| 17.01.2024

Seedling Certification scheme for Industrially Compostable Products.

Last year, a revised version of the Seedling Certification Scheme for products made from industrially compostable materials has come into effect. The new scheme includes several amendments compared to the previous version like:

• A new section on eligibility criteria

• Restriction on intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS)

• Disintegration testing of wet wipes and additional requirements for the disintegration testing of non-woven products

• Ecotoxicity testing of constituents present below 0.1%

• Use of chemically recycled monomers to produce already certified PLA

• Addition of EN ISO 14855-2 and ASTM D6866

• Changes reflecting the latest versions of ISO 17088 and ASTM D6400

• Addition of certain PHAs in Annex A

A significant change is the change of the Seedling logo to “industrially compostable“. The new wording is supposed to create more transparency for costumers and end user regarding the actual conditions under which the certified products do biodegrade.

The updated scheme and the new logo will apply latest with the extension of certificates, and immediately for all new applications. It is also possible to already use the updated logo now in connection with any exiting certificates based on the previous scheme.

The Seedling Logo and the certification scheme are owned by European Bioplastics, and DIN CERTCO is your experienced third-party certification body to support with the necessary conformity assessment.
