A certification according to REDcert (REDcert DE and REDcert EU) can be used as evidence for fulfillment of the statuary sustainability requirements for biofuels within the bioenergy market (in force since 2011).
REDcert systems apply for all participating steps – starting with production and storage of raw materials via the conversion in oil mills to the production of biofuels.
As of 2015 there is the possibility for a certification of sustainable biomass with REDcert² in non-regulated markets. This enables the certification of sustainable supply chains in the food and feed market. REDcert² is based on the REDcert EU System in form and content. With slight additional expenses a certification with REDcert² and REDcert EU at the same time is possible.
REDcert EU and REDcert² are applicable for the whole European market.
The specifications for certification according to the REDcert systems are listed in the certification scheme. This can be found under Documents.
Testing and Certification
REDcert systems are based on requirements stated in Directive (EU) 2023/2413 (Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 October 2023; RED III). The requirements of the REDcert EU System are in line with the aims defined in the Directive, and they also take into account local conditions.

The path for using the mark
The first step in the certification process is the transmission of your company information for the generation of a quotation. For this purpose please fill out our customer questionnaire. If you do not wish to receive a quotation, the Schedule of Fees in their current version apply. To start the certification process please send in the signed and stamped application form. Next we will assign an auditor who will arrange an on site audit at your company.
Note: The audit can only be performed in case of an existent registration with REDcert.
DIN CERTCO adopts a three-tier approach to certifying the sustainability of your biofuel products:
- Audit of Sustainability Criteria in the Field
- Verify land use and change of use with the help of databases and satellite imagery
- Check system documentation
- Mass Balance Verification
- Accounting for incoming and outgoing flows of biomass
- Audit of the reliability and sustainability of the system
- Calculation of Greenhouse Gas Savings
- Plausability check according to requirements for GHG calculation from REDcert
Note: RED III or Renewable Energy Directive III (Directive (EU) 2023/2413) calls for increasing GHG reductions. At least 65% for biofuels, biogas consumed in the transport sector, and bioliquids produced in installations starting operation from 1 January 2021. For electricity, heating and cooling production from biomass fuels used in installations that started operating after 20 November 2023, at least 80%.
Following the audit the data will be assessed and a certification decision will be made.
