DINplus Home Compostable Carrier Bags

Since more than 10 years DIN CERTCO Gesellschaft für Konformitätsbewertung mbH offers certification of home compostable products made of biodegradable materials. For that, the mark “DIN-Geprüft Home Compostable” Logo is granted. Additionally, we have developed a certification exclusively for Carrier Bags under home composting conditions.

The “DINplus Home Compostable Carrier Bags” certification scheme is based on the most recent European standard for home compostability: DIN EN 17427 "Packaging - Requirements and test scheme for carrier bags suitable for treatment in well-managed home composting installations". With this certification scheme, carrier bags, fruit and vegetable bags, and (organic) waste bags can be labeled with the trusted certification mark "DINplus Home Compostable Carrier Bags." The modular certification scheme can also be used to certify the corresponding materials and semi-finished items.

With the recognized and neutral DINplus quality mark, DIN CERTCO offers manufacturer and distributors of Carrier Bags, the opportunity to convince their customer of the quality and safety of their products.

With DIN certification, manufacturers document that their Carrier Bags meet all the requirements specified in the standard and that their products have been voluntarily tested and certified by neutral, independent and competent bodies.

Certification can be based on the standards listed below:

• DIN EN 17427 "Packaging - Requirements and test scheme for carrier bags suitable for treatment in well-managed home composting installations"

According to the standards mentioned above the following tests are required:

• Chemical characterization (heavy metals and other toxic substances)
• Ultimate biodegradability (carrier bag material and organic additives used between 1% and 15% by dry mass)
• Compostability under home composting conditions with no more than 180 days according to DIN EN 17428:2024-02
• Quality of the compost (plant ecotoxicity, earthworm toxicity and nitrification test)
• Infrared-Spectra

Certification is valid for 3 years for carrier bags, and 6 years for intermediates and materials.

All certified carrier bags are frequently verified by means of annual recording of Infrared-(IR)-spectra, thickness and/or grammage. Additionally, a chemical characterization is required once during the lifetime of the certificate.

The verification interval of the materials and intermediates is two years.
